Watch The Slow Progress of Marriage Equality In One GIF
As of now 16 states have legalized gay marriage, 33 states still ban it either because of their constitution or state laws, and then we have New Mexico with no professed opinion either way (although some counties have started issuing marriage licenses in recent months).
The above GIF shows developments in the fight for marriage equality from 1973-2014. While it looks black at first, the pink and purple start creeping in there to give us hope.
Gay marriage in Hawaii goes into effect in December, Illinois in June 2014 and Oregon now recognizes out of state marriage. So maybe New Mexico should stop watching re-runs of Breaking Bad for five minutes and sack up in the fight for marriage equality. What do you say?

this gif is a good reminder of the fact that marriage equality victories were preceded by an enormous wave of same-sex marriage bans—not the other way around. the fight for same-sex marriage became the major movement it is today not because lgbt activists decided it was critically important but largely because paranoid conservatives forced the issue and activists were compelled to fight back (and the media—run overwhelmingly by straight people—focused a lot of attention on it because it was, and is, scandalous to straight audiences). it’s not wrong to criticize the disproportionate prioritization of same-sex marriage—on the contrary—but i think this is important context to remember when we do.

I feel bad for homophobes. It must be really hard to go through life thinking pizzas and dogs and chickens and young children are the same thing as a gay adult. It’s an epidemic among their kind. Simeon probably caught an episode of Queer Eye for the Straight Guy and wondered why five chicken drumsticks were painting a bathroom peach.
…That said, I would marry a pizza. Satan shoots and scores!

SERIOUSLY! Although I tend to think it mostly shows a staggeringly poor view of
straight marriage: all this gibberish about gay marriage paving the way for marrying children/animals/inanimate objects etc ONLY MAKES SENSE if you are parsing straight marriage as a formally recognised union between a human (which is largely being thought of as a man, afaics) and the thing that human wants to fuck.
If you are parsing straight marriage as a formal declaration of love and commitment between conselting adults with agency, then none of this “o noes bestiality/paedophilia/pizza-shagging!” stuff makes a single jot of sense. There is no segue. For this train of thought to work, you have to be thinking of women as objects men marry, rather than equal partners in the process.

OOOOOOOH THAT COMMENT ^^

In current debates on marriage equality, it’s usually assumed intersex people will gain equal rights when gay marriage has been legalized or that they already have equal rights. Unfortunately though, neither is the case.
Terminology is of much importance here…

a very interesting article: http://bit.ly/Pphlf5

Furthermore, the court found that “intersex [people] are not wholly male or female and in the matter of C and [D] his honour found that being of indeterminate sex [, intersex persons] were barred from marriage.

BARRED FROM MARRIAGE

Goodbye pumpkin spice latte. Forever.

Last year during this exact week, I wrote a blog titled, ‘Starbucks Disrespects Values Voters,’ calling out Starbucks’ CEO, Howard Schultz, for supporting a liberal political agenda that totally disregards the traditional values of many customers and staff members.

Another year gone by and Schultz has become even more extreme and intolerant. At Starbucks’ annual shareholders meeting, Schultz sent a clear message that he does not want the business of anyone who believes that marriage is a sacred covenant between a man and a woman, pointedly telling one such shareholder, ‘You can sell your shares in Starbucks and buy shares in another company.’ This outburst reportedly came right after Schultz stated he wanted to ‘embrace diversity of all kinds.’

He doesn’t want our business. Schultz statement isn’t tolerant. It is prejudicial and bigoted. So where are the newspaper headlines reading, ‘Starbucks CEO Refuses Pro-Marriage Supporters Service,’ which is exactly the message his statement conveys?

What’s next, Starbucks? Two separate drinking fountains for liberals and conservatives or ‘now hiring’ signs reading, ‘Heterosexuals Need Not Apply’?

Considering that there are twice as many conservatives as there are liberals, Schultz should have heeded my warning a year ago. In fact, during this year’s meeting, conservative shareholder Tom Strobhar admitted that after the company voiced its support for same-sex “marriage” in Washington state, the company saw a drop in profits.

So in the end, Schultz is only tolerant of approximately 2 percent of America’s 300 million citizens who live homosexual lifestyles. I do not hold an MBA, but I do remember that 4th grade arithmetic teaches us that the profits made from 2 percent are less than the profits from 98 percent.

I’ve already dumped Starbucks. I prefer Dunkin’ Donuts, anyway.

OMG CAN WE PLEASE PUT SIGNS OUT SAYING HETEROSEXUALS NEED NOT APPLY IN STATES WHERE SEXUAL ORIENTATION ISN’T A PROTECTED CLASS?!?!

One… oh lord… and two, penciling some Starbucks in during my errands tomorrow. I will have the biggest drink they have in honor of queer folks everywhere. (It’ll be an iced chai, if anyone’s wondering.)

Twice as many conservatives as liberals?  Did they decide math was a left wing conspiracy, too?

(via amhran-comhrac)

There is a fucking starbucks on every corner here. I can easily support this. Spoiler: I already was a SB fan, no shock there.

I’m not a Starbucks fan (their stuff is too sweet for me), but I fully support this. OH THE POOR OPPRESSED STRAIGHT CONSERVATIVES! NOTHING EVER GOES THEIR WAY!
