In Boulder CO, a very sweet man is having to give up his kitty, Princess. She was his mother’s cat who he took in after mom’s death 6 years ago. Now, after 4 years in his current apartment, the new management has decided they want $500 for a pet deposit (it was never asked for before) and $50 per month for pet rent. Needless to say, in this economy, he is barely scraping by on what he makes and cannot afford to pay what they are asking on top of his regular rent and bills.
Signal boosting. Anyone in Colorado have a home for a sweet senior kitty?

My favorite kitten I’ve never met is gone :(
I loved Lefty so much. I read about rescued kittens and cats every day and see their photos on flickr and hear about their antics, so even though I’ve never met them, it’s always really hard for me when one of them passes away. It sounds like Lefty was really sick though, having seizures and possibly going blind. He was a rescued bottle baby, so his immune system probably wasn’t as strong as other kitties’. Oh Lefty, you will be missed.

This Is All Kinds Of Wrong of the Day: The Arizona Humane Society has come under fire for euthanizing the nine-month old kitten of a recovering heroin addict who was unable to pay $400 for the animal’s surgery.
Scruffy the cat was Daniel Dockery’s “closest companion.” Dockery had raised the feline from birth.
Earlier this month, Scruffy sustained severe injuries after getting tangled in some barbed-wire fencing. The AHS demanded $400 from Dockery to treat his pet. He requested 24 hours to obtain the money by wire from his mother in Michigan, but staff members would not allow it. They even rejected his request to have his mother provide her credit card information over the phone.
They left him with one option: Sign over Scruffy’s ownership rights or the cat would go untreated.
Dockery reluctantly gave Scruffy over to the AHS after being assured the cat would receive medical aid and put in foster care. He then spent two weeks attempting to track Scruffy down at every local shelter, but to no avail.
Yesterday, Arizona Republic‘s Robert Anglen learned the heartbreaking truth: Scruffy had been euthanized.
Asked to explain its actions, AHS told Anglen the kitten was put down “not because of its wounds, but because its owner could not immediately pay for its care.”
Apparently there were only enough resources to treat two of the three ailing cats at the clinic, and Scruffy pulled out the short straw.
“Now I’ve got to think about how I failed that beautiful animal,” Dockery said. “I failed her. … That’s so wrong. There was no reason for her not to be treated.”
AHS told Anglen it would be reconsidering its policy of rejecting payment over the phone.
Despite all he’s been through, Dockery still feels taking Scruffy to the AHS was the right decision. “I don’t want to turn people away from the Humane Society,” he said. “They do do good works.”

I have no idea how accurate that statistic is, but please spay or neuter your cat. It can never be said enough.
And yeah, don’t declaw. If you’re worried about your cat scratching people (such as kids), learn to clip its nails. It is not hard, especially if you have a towel and patience, and it renders their scratches virtually harmless. If you’re worried about your cat scratching your stuff, many shelters use the ASPCA’s Meet Your Match program, which can help you choose a cat that’s best for your lifestyle. A low-energy “purple” cat will probably be less likely to scratch up your stuff out of boredom. And really, if you care more about your furniture than your pets, don’t get a cat.
But seriously, wherever you stand on the issue of claws, spay or neuter your cat. Did you know that an unspayed female cat can reach sexual maturity and go into heat as early as six months old? Once she gets pregnant, the average gestation period is nine weeks. And then she can get pregnant AGAIN, and HER kittens can have kittens when they reach maturity, and so on and so forth, and no matter how you do the math it comes out to a staggering number of cats in a very short period of time.
(Also, spayed and neutered cats are less likely to cause an allergic reaction, less likely to escape, less likely to get certain cancers, and more likely to live longer. I’m just saying.)

Cat TARDIS

Debbie, you need this.

OMG, if my apartment was bigger, this would totally be Gretl’s house.

I need this and upwards of 4 kittens to make my life complete.

THIS IS LIKE EVERYTHING I LOVE IN ONE PLACE.
