The new policy does not specifically state that it allows same-sex couples. Instead, it allows students to bring a “guest.” Chase Wall, a student at Starmount High School in North Carolina has been looking forward to attending the prom on May 1 with his boyfriend, Jordan Beam. According to the report by FOX8, The principal told Wall that he could not bring his boyfriend to the prom. Beam’s mother confronted the school about the issue, and threatened to get the ACLU and the media involved. The principal left this message on Beam’s mother’s home answering machine: “We are going to allow Chase to bring, I guess it’s your son, as his outside date and what we are probably going to have to change about our policy is just to allow any student to bring a guest and not necessarily call it a date.” Many people in the town disagreed with school’s decision. According to the report, school administrators refused to talk to FOX8 on camera, but they did say that they had a no-discrimination policy.
